Chinese Names are often literal. I’m reading a story in this month’s National Geographic that talks about the state of industry in China, and many of the people mentioned in it have the literal translations next to the Chinese version of the name. Names like ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Snow Queen.’ Names that don’t just sound strong or pretty, but actually represent strength or beauty in the image they carry. Somewhat like how native Americans names are literal.
I just found that interesting. Nic Cage named his son Kal El, after Superman, and the entertainment reporters just about laughed him out of Hollywood. Yet, in China, ‘Iron Man’ is an acceptable name. I think that’s cool.
